Skyline's History
August 1954
Started in Knoxville, TN by W.H. Reed Sr. and his
brother Earl Reed. At this time Skyline served as a
local interline trucking
company for large LTL carriers in the United States such
as Yellow, Roadway, and CF. Skyline operated within a
200
mile radius of Knoxville, TN
September 1980
U.S. Government deregulated the transportation industry
allowing All trucking companies to compete for business
anywhere in the
Continental U.S. without having to obtain operating
authority for each individual state. This allowed
Skyline to begin offering LTL service in the Southeast
states of Tennessee, Ohio, North Carolina and Alabama.
Sept. 1980 until January 1999
Skyline continued to grow and expand their LTL service
area. W.H. Reed Sr. retired and his son Bill Reed Jr.
continued to lead the company. Bill took the companies
operations from 3 freight terminals up to 22 freight
terminals. In January 1999 Skyline was a major
competitor in the southeast regional LTL market. Skyline
employed over 600 people in the 10 states that we
offered LTL service to. Skyline had great service due to
good utilization of the four breakbulk facilities in our
network. Shippers in the southeast knew if it was
service you needed then Skyline was the carrier to call.
January 15, 1999
Skyline sold its LTL book of business to Old Dominion
Freight Lines based in High Point, NC. Old Dominion took
over the LTL operations on this day. Skyline executives
agreed not to Compete in the LTL market for 3 years. Old
Dominion and
Skyline Executives did agree that Skyline could conduct
truckload business or dedicated business with previous
business partners. We were also allowed to operate under
the same name, Skyline.
January 16, 1999
Skyline Truckload/Dedicated began operations. We
invested in the newest technology available so that we
could be more competitive in the truckload and dedicated
markets. Our service area now covers the eastern half of
the United States. Qualcomm satellites in our trucks
link to our AS400 computer system to give us instant
communication with our drivers. Today Skyline is
operated by Jeff Reed and Bill Reed III the two sons of
